할로윈 관련 영어표현

10월 말에 접어들고 있는 지금, 11월이 시작되기 전 10월의 피날레를 장식할 페스티벌이 지요. 바로 할로윈! 점점 할로윈을 기념하고, 페스티벌을 즐길 수 있는 곳이 늘어나면서 지금부터 할로윈 파티 전 의상을 준비하고 있는 분들도 있을 텐데요. 오늘은 할로윈 관련 영어표현을 함께 알아보려고 합니다. 

 

Boogeyman (US) / Bogeyman (UK) (noun) - 부게맨

An imaginary spirit used to scare children. 

어린 아이들을 겁줄 때 사용하는 상상의 영혼을 일컫습니다. 

"Did you check under the bed for the boogeyman?" - 침대 밑에 부게맨이 없는지 확인했니?

 

 

Bloodcurdling (adjective) 소름끼치는 

To invoke extreme fear or terror. 

극심한 공포 및 두려움을 불러일으키는 감정을 표현할 때 사용합니다. 

"The screams were bloodcurlding, it sent shivers down my back."  - 그 비명소리는 소름끼쳐서 등을 타고 내려왔다.

 

 

Cackle (noun, verb) 날카로운 웃음소리

A loud, shrill laugh, usually associated with cartoony witches. Can also be used as the verb "to cackle."

크고 날카로운 웃음소리를 의미하며 일반적으로 마녀와 연관된 단어입니다. 동사로도 사용하는 단어죠!

"The cackle at the end of 'Thriller' always scares me." - 영화 '스릴러' 마지막 부분에 웃음소리는 항상 날 무섭게 해. 

 

 

Costume (US) / Fancy Dress (UK) (noun) 의상

The clothing worn by someone to look like someone else.

누군가처럼 보이게 입은 의상

"What's your costume for the Halloween party? Are you dressing up as a witch or a cat?" - 할로윈 파티에 어떤 의상을 입을거니? 마녀 또는 고양이 의상? 
 "Are you going in fancy dress to the party tonight?" - 오늘 밤 파티에 특별한 의상을 입고 갈 거니?

Cauldron (adjective) 가마솥 

A big cast iron pot for cooking over an open fire. In fiction, witches would cook potions in their cauldrons. 

"The halloween party was great, the hot food was served in a big cauldron." - 그 할로윈 파티는 끝내줬어, 뜨거운 음식은 가마솥 그릇에 담겨져 나왔어.

 

 

Ghoulish (adjective) 잔인한, 엽기적인 

Something that suggests the horror and fear of ghouls or death. 

"Hiram has such a ghoulish sense of humor. He's always joking about death." - 히람은 엽기적인 유머감각을 지녔어. 항상 죽음 관련된 농담을 한다니까.

 

 

Gruesome (adjective) 섬뜩한, 소름끼치는 

Something that is very unpleasant and fills someone with horror.

"I thought Marion's ghost story was so gruesome!" - 매리슨의 유령 이야기는 정말 소름끼쳤어.

Jack-'o-Lantern (noun) 호박등 

An emptied, hollowed pumpkin, with a face or other carving cut into it. 

"Chase made his pumpkin into a jack-'o-lantern with a scene from A Nightmare Before Christmas."  - 체이스는 영화 '크리스마스의 악몽'의 한 장면을 테마로 호박등을 만들었어. 

 

 

Masquerade (noun, verb) 가면무도회 

To dress up or pretend to be someone else. Can also be used as a verb: "to masquerade".

"I love going to masquerade balls. It's so much fun trying to guess who is who." - 난 가면무도회가는 걸 좋아해. 누군지 예상하는 건 정말 재밌다니까. 

 

 

Petrify (verb) 겁에 질리게 만들다

To make someone extremely frightened. 

"I was petrified after watching The Exorcist for the first time." - 영화 '엑소시스트'를 처음 본 후에 잔뜩 겁을 먹었어. 

 

 

Spine-Tingling (adjective) 등골이 오싹한, 소름끼치는 

A sensation of fear or excitement; something that sends chills down one's spine.

"Clarice was hoping for a spine-tingling experience at the haunted house." - 클래리스는 귀신이 나오는 흉가에서 등골이 오싹한 경험을 하길 기대하고 있었어.

 

 

Superstition (noun) 미신

The belief in something that is not scientific but rather connected to magic or something supernatural.

"People always think my black cat is superstitious, but she's just a neighbourhood pet!"  - 사람들은 항상 내 검은 고양이를 미신과 연관지어  각하지만, 동네 고양이일 뿐이야. 

 

 

Trick-or-Treat (verb) 트릭 또는 트릿

To go out and collect candy around the neighborhood on or around Halloween night while wearing a costume. It's also the phrase children will say when approaching someone for candy. 

코스튬을 입고 할로윈 저녁에 동네를 돌아다니며 사탕을 얻는 것을 일컫습니다. 사탕을 받기 위해 이웃집 문을 두드린 후 외칠 수 있는 문구입니다. 

Trick or Treat
Smell my feet
Give me something good to eat
If you don't, I don't care
I'll pull down your underwear 

 

 

Warlock (noun) 워록: 사악한 남자 마법사 

A warlock is the equivalent of a male witch and someone who practices sorcery, magic and fortune telling. 

"Jimmy makes all these homemade potions for his health – he's like a warlock."  지미는 건강을 생각해서 집에서 이렇게나 많은 홈메이드를 만들었어, 마치 워록과 같이.
